Welcome to Chester's Catholic Website

This site provides an introduction to the Catholic parishes of Chester and District, part of the RC Diocese of Shrewsbury. Since October 2007 the Diocese has been divided into six Regions and 26 Local Pastoral Areas (LPAs). The parishes of Chester and District form “Local Pastoral Area 11” within the “North Cheshire” Region.

THE LOCAL PASTORAL AREA TEAM

The LPA Team comprises:

·         Priest and elected person from each parish with the LPA;

·         A Deacon, elected by Deacons within the LPA;

·         A Catechist from within the LPA, nominated by the Bishop;

·         A Teacher from schools within the LPA, nominated by the Bishop.

Team members serve initially for three years, which is renewable once. The Team meets three or four times per year. It elects one priest and one lay person to be Co-Leaders.

TEAM TASKS

The Team is expected to:

·         Continually assess the pastoral needs of its Area;

·         Identify ways of furthering church mission in the Area;

·         Support the life of parishes in the Area;

·         Investigate having special events across LPAs;

·         Ensure agreed ideas are implemented.

This framework affected previous arrangements in Chester and District in two ways:

In June 2007 the former CPC held “Parishes in Partnership”, an evening event at Chester Catholic High School.  Around 90 parishioners from across the district gathered to consider some of the key issues surrounding lay involvement and inter-parish co-operation. A detailed note was prepared, for further consideration by the new Pastoral Team.
